Frustrating TV
I recently watched the latest episode of Flash Forward “Let No Man Put Asunder”. A little background on my take on Flash Forward. This show has great promise. I’m a fan of the fantasy of granting the entire world a view into its future. The premise is great. It’s just a glimpse and great fodder for generating future stories.
On to my frustration. The main character has a wife (not my frustration). In her glimpse she finds herself laying in bed to a man she, at the time, does not know. It turns out she ends up meeting him and drama ensues. I’m fine with that kind of drama. She seems very cold to this new found person which is appropriate for someone that loves her husband and doesn’t want to ruin an already rocky marriage.
Now we come to my frustration. This most recent episode explored the relationship of these two people. And what do we find? Somehow, somewhere in her head, she gets the idea that it would be a good idea to kiss this man. We are given no prior glimpse that she is all that attracted to him or him her but yet here we are. We find these two in his house and “scared” about their feelings yet exploring them as if there had been any buildup to the realization that they are attracted to each other.
I don’t know really why I am so bothered by this new development. The writers kind of set up the story with her flash forward and later on with his flash forward. They tried to force a larger crack in an already shaky marriage with irrational jealousy on the part of the husband. But they have been debunking the flash forwards here and there. An FBI agent kills himself to prevent the death of someone in his flash forward. Another agent kills a man who clearly was not dead from his flash forward. But then they force this rift with this woman and her husband and it really feels forced. It’s as if the writers were given a premise and told “get them to this point” and had no really good ideas on how to do it.
I for one am questioning my willingness to waste time on this show. I really want to like this show but the characters are just not getting me there. And this latest development just has me frustrated. I’m frustrated by my TV…BOO!
